China Eastern Airlines hasn’t given up on the idea of bringing Singapore Airlines into its share register as a strategic partner. The company, whose debt has climbed to 95% of the value of its assets, says it will resume talks with SIA after the Olympic Games to be held next month. The company fears a hostile takeover bid from Air China. China Eastern and hometown rival Shanghai Airlines both deny a media report that they may merge. If they did, they would dominate traffic at the airports of China’s largest city.
Thailand’s Bangkok Airways is cutting back international routes in response to high fuel prices. It will suspend flying from Bangkok to Fukuoka and Shenzhen, while its affiliate Siem Reap Airways drops its service between Siem Reap and Hong Kong.
Qantas has named the head of its budget offshoot, Alan Joyce, as successor to CEO Geoff Dixon. Joyce, who has worked for Qantas since 2000 and was previously an executive with Aer Lingus and failed Qantas rival Ansett Australia, will take over in November.
