Japan is doubling down on stand-off weapons and counter-strike capabilities as it describes the security landscape it faces as its “greatest trial since WWII.”

For now simply known by its project name “New SSM,” the cruise missile was shown publicly for the first time at the DSEI Japan exhibition.

The Japan Air Self Defense Force is looking to buy five more Northrop Grumman E-2D Advanced Hawkeyes to supplement its airborne early warning capabilities.

The U.S. Air Force will buy three new General Atomics Aeronautical Systems MQ-9B SkyGuardian remotely piloted aircraft.
