As airlines continue to strive for increased efficiencies, any prospect involving a requirement for fewer resources is welcomed. This applies to a move being considered by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) to change EASA Part M Subpart G continuing airworthiness management organization (CAMO) requirements to allow commercial aircraft operators to outsource their Part M CAMO functions. This new initiative would enable AOC holders to contract approved CAMOs, such as Boeing, to manage the continued airworthiness of their fleets.
The recent trend to modify older cabin interiors signals not only that the aftermarket is growing, but also that the airline industry is getting back on its feet. Carriers, inspired by next-generation aircraft, are moving beyond the cost savings of performing only required maintenance to paying renewed attention to their narrowbody fleets. You can't drive the speed limit if you don't know how fast you're going. That's Rayner Hutchinson's analogy for trying to improve safety and reduce human error without a 360-degree, data-rich view of your maintenance organization. Hutchinson, VP quality and safety at AAR Corp., has a good point: if you don't know where you stand today, you can't possibly know how to achieve measurable gains in safety.
The European Commission's ambitious aviation occurrence data compilation effort is beginning to bear fruit in both the amount of information being collected and the quality of the reports. EASA's recently issued 2010 Annual Safety Review included an update on the program, known as the European Central Repository for occurrences (ECR).
Turkish Technic completed 1,007,721 base maintenance man-hours and 452,526 component maintenance man-hours in 2010. This gave it a 87% utilization for base maintenance and 80% utilization for component maintenance last year. Of its $480 million in revenue, $95 million of that came from line maintenance services in 2010. The MRO expects most growth to stem from aircraft heavy maintenance; component pool services; aircraft and cabin reconfiguration and modifications; and parts repair, design and manufacture, says Dr. Ismail Demir, Turkish Technic's general manager.
