As airlines await deliveries of new-generation replacements for older widebody fleets, the need to balance economics and passenger comfort has never been greater. Some carriers are now trying to make the best out of the waiting time by optimizing their current fleets.
David Berg, who is senior vice president/general counsel/corporate secretary of Washington-based Airlines for America, has been appointed to the U.S. Travel and Tourism Advisory Board. Its members advise the commerce secretary on matters relating to the travel and tourism industry.
The U.S. Navy is preparing to conduct a new round of sea trials this summer with its X-47B stealthy aircraft to prove the unmanned system can clear the busy aircraft carrier deck in 90 sec. or less, just like its piloted counterparts. This would allow for a more seamless flow of manned and unmanned launches and recoveries on deck, a key step toward earning unmanned aircraft a coveted parking space on American carriers in 2020.
Isaac Lee, general manager of Landmark Aviation’s Miami International Airport facility, has been named the company’s 2013 General Manager of the Year. He is also a member of the board of directors of the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Florida Aviation Business Association.
Gwynne R. Shotwell (see photo), president/chief operating officer of SpaceX, has been named to receive the National Space Society’ s Space Pioneer Award for the Entrepreneurial Business category. She will be honored for her day-to-day management of SpaceX business and leading the sales of more than $5 billion in launch services business.
The jet and turboprop MRO market will grow to $65.1 billion in the next five years from the projected $56.3 billion in 2014, even while the compound annual growth rate of airframe heavy maintenance labor hours drops by 0.4% during the period, according to Aviation Week’s civil aviation fleet and MRO forecast. Factors driving this trend include MRO providers adopting continuous improvements to increase efficiency, escalating material and engine repair costs, and new aircraft deliveries continuing at a torrid pace through 2018.
Victor Novikov (see photo) has been appointed managing director of the Kumertau Aviation Production Enterprise, part of Russian Helicopters. He was deputy CEO of DBA Engineering, a United Engine Corp. company. Novikov succeeds Sergei Mikryukov.

Marc L. Warren has become senior counsel in the aviation and administrative law and regulatory practice groups, of law firm Crowell and Moring in its Washington office. He was acting FAA chief counsel and had been deputy chief counsel and deputy chief counsel for operations.
Andy Armstrong (see photo) has been named to succeed Tim Prince as chief executive of Royal Air Force Charitable Trust Enterprises, which organizes the annual Royal International Air Tattoo at RAF Fairford, following the show in July. He was managing director for Northern Europe for Sony Pictures’ Home Entertainment.
USAF Gen. (ret.) C. Robert Kehler has been named a non-executive director of the board of U.K.-based Inmarsat, effective May 6. Before his retirement, Kehler was commander of the U.S. Strategic Command and had been commander of the Air Force Space Command.
Jon Slangerup has been appointed to the board of directors of Mxi Technologies of Ottawa. He is an executive adviser to Moelis Capital Partners and was president of FedEx Canada.

Robert Morin has been named senior vice president for business and product development for the Washington-based Export-Import Bank of the United States. He has been vice president of the Aircraft Finance Div. and was aviation counsel.
Teri Bristol, who has been acting chief operating officer of the FAA’s Air Traffic Organization, has been named the permanent COO. She succeeds David Grizzle and has been deputy COO.
Steven Moore (see photo) has become director of the aerospace and defense practice at RS&H Inc., Jacksonville, Fla. He succeeds Wayne Finger, who will be retiring. Moore has been the practice’s operations manager.
Mexican aviation is expanding steadily. AeroMexico passenger counts are up 20% from a year ago, and two low-cost carriers (LCC) are expanding rapidly. The country already has a substantial middle-class travel market that will only get bigger.
