Boeing plans to create additional passenger to freighter conversion capacity, says its services leader.
While he did not elaborate on the details, Boeing Global Services President and CEO Ted Colbert told Aviation Week: “We’re finalizing plans on that to meet customer demand over the next couple of years.”
The freighter market continues to be a bright spot in the pandemic, with air cargo demand up 9% in February over the same month in 2019, according to IATA.
“Yields have remained very high and more freighters are flying than before the pandemic due to limited belly cargo capacity from passenger airplanes,” Boeing CEO Dave Calhoun said during the company’s April 28 first quarter earnings call.
Over the next 20 years, Boeing expects demand for 1,500 converted freighters to satisfy projected cargo needs.
The company just delivered its 50th 737-800BCF and has more than 180 orders and commitments to date for that aircraft. In addition, it has delivered 40 767-300BCFs and has 80 orders and commitments for that converted freighter.
