Iran Builds New Hypersonic Ballistic Missile: Report

Iran has built a hypersonic ballistic missile designed to evade and defeat air defense systems, the commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps Aerospace Force said on Nov. 10.

The unnamed missile has the ability to maneuver above and below the atmosphere and can fly at a speed of more than Mach 5, Brig. Gen. Amir Ali Hajizadeh told the semiofficial Tasnim news agency.

“I don’t think any technology would be found for tens of years capable of countering it,” Hajizadeh said, adding that the new weapon would target anti-missile systems.

The Tasnim news agency did not identify the missile, but previous Iranian news reports have described a new medium-range ballistic missile with a tri-conic re-entry vehicle.

The solid-fuel Kheibarshekan, or Fortress Breaker, entered operational service in February, the Iranian News Agency (IRNA) reported on Feb. 24.

A photo in the IRNA story showed elements of nine different missiles on their mobile launchers in an underground storage bunker.

"Below the atmosphere" is either underground or underwater. It reminds me the the underwater satellite episode of Sea Hunt, but that would be a bit before your time
