The U.S. Army on Sept. 30 awarded Boeing a $63 million firm-fixed-price contract for two more CH-47F Block II Chinook helicopters.
The pair of CH-47F Block IIs are in addition to a separate $136 million contract for the first four helicopters, bringing the total on contract to six. There is also a separate $29 million Lot 3 advance procurement contract.
Work on the two new aircraft is expected to be completed by Nov. 3, 2024. The updated Block II includes modifications such as redesigned fuel tanks, a strengthened fuselage and improved drivetrain.
“Modernizing the Chinook for our Army customer is a priority,” said Ken Eland, Boeing vice president and H-47 program manager. “CH-47F Block II improves readiness, limits future sustainment costs and provides commonality across the fleet. We’re dedicated to making CH-47F Block II the best option for the Army’s heavy lift mission, now and well into the future.”
The contract comes after Germany announced in June that it would be the second international customer for the Block II CH-47F, with plans to buy 60 of the helicopters. The UK has also ordered 14 H-7 (Extended Range) Chinooks.
