Air traffic controllers can win $50 gift certificates by catching pilots who read back clearances incorrectly, under a test program underway at the FAA's Atlanta Center. A decrease in qualified pilot applicants has led Southwest Airlines to waive its long-standing requirement that pilots be type rated in the Boeing 737 prior to their first interview. Southwest is looking to hire 344 pilots this year, but claims the new policy will allow this goal to be reached without lowering standards. Either way, the move is a poignant reminder of the growing shortage of experienced pilots.

The FAA has awarded a supplemental type certificate to Maryland-based PATS, Inc. for the installation of long-range fuel tanks in the Boeing Business Jet (BBJ). Up to nine additional fuel tanks provide a 55-percent increase in fuel capacity, enabling a 6,200-mile range with eight passengers and NBAA IFR reserves. Most BBJs will be fitted with five to seven tanks for a maximum range of 5,000 to 5,850 miles. The installation process takes two to three weeks; PATS does them at Sussex County Airport in Georgetown, Del.
