XL Aerospace, a provider of aviation engineering, repair and manufacturing solutions to general aviation and helicopter MRO sectors, received regulatory approval to repair the main transmission casing on Bell 205, 212, and 412 Helicopter models.
According to Aviation Week Network’s Fleet Discovery, there are 2,650 of these helicopters in service, of which, 1,031 are the Bell 412 model, 892 are the Bell 205/UH-1H model and 713 are the Bell 212 model.
The repair design received Transport Canada (TC), FAA and EASA approval using the company’s patented additive friction stir deposition process.
The company says this process is a significant advancement to repair structural components that are not compatible with fusion-based processes. The transmission case repair work scope includes the additive friction stir deposition process, using magnesium to achieve the necessary bonding and material density.
XL Aero President Tim Blaskovich, says, “the testing program used by XL Aero in qualifying the repair demonstrated that the final deposit exhibits a tensile strength equivalent of the magnesium substrate.”
