Labor unions at Japan Airlines will strike on Wednesday and Thursday, but the airline says their action will force the cancellation of only about 2% of domestic services and no international services. Dissatisfied with the company’s proposed yearend bonus, unions representing pilots, cabin crew and other employees will strike on Wednesday. Another pilots union will strike on Wednesday and Thursday. The airline will use non-union pilots to keep flying.
Japan is making new moves to open up access to Haneda, with London following Paris in getting access to the facility, the most conveniently located of Tokyo’s two main airports. Britain and Japan have agreed that one British and one Japanese airline will each be allowed a single return daily flight from Haneda to London from October 2010, after the airport is expanded with completion of a fourth runway.
South Korea is keeping alive its option on a second batch of three destroyers with Aegis air defense systems. The second ship of the first batch, Yulgok Yi I, was launched Nov. 14. The navy tells Yonhap news agency that building a further three ships remains under consideration. It is unclear whether the design would be the same.
