AirAsia CEO Tony Fernandes says he is thinking of taking the listed airline private. The company is the largest Asia/Pacific budget carrier, one of three or four that seem destined to control most of the market outside of Japan and China.
Indonesia has shelved plans to float Garuda, because of the global financial crisis. The airline was one of three state companies whose sale was approved by a parliamentary commission in September.
Anti-democracy protesters have closed Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport, going as far as storming the control tower. Some Thai Airways flights have been diverted to the city’s old Don Muang Airport, 45 kilometers away, but airlines across Asia have halted services to the city. The Singaporean government has advised its citizens to avoid Thailand. The protesters want to remove the elected government.
