South Korea has ordered six Type 214 submarines from Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft (HDW), adding to three units of the class that it ordered in 2000. Local shipyards, beginning with Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering for the first boat, will assemble the six submarines with packages supplied by the German company. Local builders also have been responsible for the first three, of which two have been delivered.

BEIJING – China’s newly formed helicopter company will be based in Tianjin, where the city government will take 31 percent of the capital in a first step toward separating the rotary-wing business from national aircraft-making conglomerate Avic. Tianjin also will host a new production line with which the company will build light civilian helicopters, part of a range of initiatives that are turning the city, a big port close to Beijing, into a globally important aerospace center.

China Eastern Airlines will cancel some international routes as part of a broad push to turn around its routinely unprofitable business. Other measures include executive salary cuts and urging workers to take leave without pay. Some domestic routes will be dropped as well. In all, 256 measures have been formulated, says Board Secretary Luo Zhuping.
