The major airports in New Zealand are against the proposed alliance between Virgin Blue and Air New Zealand, arguing that it will reduce competition on many routes between New Zealand and Australia. In a submission to Australian regulators, NZ Airports, the country’s airport industry association, argues that the carriers' application should be denied. The airlines have filed applications with regulatory authorities in both countries to form a revenue-sharing joint venture for service across the Tasman Sea.
The FAA must do more to include and coordinate the work of other agencies on the NextGen initiative, and also review industry involvement, according to a new government report. The U.S. Transportation Department's Inspector General (IG) conducted a sweeping analysis of the NextGen program at the request of Congress. In general, the IG says, “A number of critical actions are still needed to move NextGen from planning to implementation,” and “not taking timely action on these issues could delay FAA’s plans to transition to NextGen.”
A new government report shows that the Homeland Security Department and the Transportation Security Admininstration need to improve their risk assessments across a range of transportation modes, including aviation. The Government Accountability Office found that while TSA “has taken some actions to strengthen the security of aviation and surface transportation facilities through a risk management framework, it has not fully implemented such a framework to inform the allocation of security resources across the transportation modes.”
