Gallery: Up and Away: 2022 Farnborough Airshow Takes Off

The acrobatic displays of the Red Arrows opened the event on Monday. The team is made up of some of the best Royal Air Force pilots.

The long-awaited return of the Farnborough International Airshow has seen a record number of unique visitors pass through the doors on the first day, including exhibitors, visitors, media, civil and military delegations from all over the globe who all came together to accelerate growth and set the path ahead for the aerospace industry.

Showcasing the most advanced commercial aircraft, the daily flying display brings innovation to the skies of Farnborough. Taking place on each afternoon of the show, the display sees the most advanced aircraft in both commercial and military design. Running in parallel to the exhibition, the static display gives visitors the opportunity to view the aircraft up close, with the natural Amphitheatre of the Farnborough Aerodrome allowing aircraft to be displayed to maximum effect. The Flying Display is sponsored by Accenture.

US-based Delta Air Lines jump-started the airshow with an order for 100 Boeing 737-10s, plus 30 options. Like Boeing’s other 737 MAX models, the MAX 10 incorporates the latest technology CFM International LEAP-1B engines, Advanced Technology winglets, Boeing Sky Interior, large flight deck displays, and other improvements to deliver the highest efficiency.

ITA Airways is participating for the first time at Farnborough, its first-ever for the Italian national carrier. ITA is showcasing its flagship aircraft, the new Airbus A350 with blue livery: the fifth of its kind to join the new ITA Airways fleet of new generation aircraft. ITA Airways aims to become the greenest airline in Europe, with 75% of its fleet featuring environmentally friendly aircraft by 2025.

In an exclusive interview with ATW ahead of the airshow, recorded as a Window Seat podcast, Boeing Commercial Airplanes president and CEO Stan Deal cited the 777-9 as an example of where the US manufacturer has demonstrated progress. “We feel good about where we’ve set the 777-9 [first deliveries] out in 2025. It’ll give us that necessary time to work the regulatory environment and deliver on all of our promises. The good news about the 777, for instance—which will be at the show, and you'll get to see it fly in all its grace and glory—is the fuel burn and the efficiency is right on spec. And it’s going to deliver unprecedented environmental benefits to our airline customers,” he said.

Qatar Airways is displaying its Boeing 777-300ER aircraft with a special FIFA World Cup 2022 livery, in anticipation of the tournament to be hosted in Doha later this year. This aircraft features the Qsuite Business Class seat.

Qatar Airways is also showcasing its Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, never previously displayed at an air show. The passenger aircraft entered service with the airline in 2021 and features the new Adient Ascent Business Class Suite, equipped with sliding privacy doors, wireless mobile device charging and a 79-inch lie-flat bed.

The largest aircraft in the E-Jet E2 family, Embraer says the E190-E2 has been designed to maximize returns and efficiency on high-density routes. With its high-aspect ratio wings and swept tips, combined with other aerodynamic improvements, the E195-E2 achieves double digit lower fuel consumption compared to current-generation E-Jets.

ATR is optimistic for a strong future for regional aircraft with it ATR 72-600, soon to be 100% SAF certified in both engines.

Deutsche Aircraft said it is accelerating the aviation industry’s transition toward lower emissions using the Dornier D328eco. As the only existing platform that is capable of fulfilling the efficiency and performance requirements for a modern, more eco-friendly aircraft, the German manufacturer is starting the transition to a greener future by utilizing the already proven D328 platform and developing disruptive technologies, allowing the company to pave the way to zero emissions flights within the next 15 years, ahead of the 2050 international guidelines.

Latvian carrier AirBaltic is showcasing one of its Airbus A220-300 aircraft. Thus far, airBaltic said it has carried nearly 8 600 000 passengers on the Airbus A220-300. The aircraft type has completed more than 92,000 flights and flown over 200 000 block hours. Since May 2020, airBaltic operates all its flights with the single aircraft type, thus minimizing the complexity and benefiting from the additional efficiency provided by the aircraft.

As the cornerstone member in Airbus’ A350 family, the A350-900 accommodates 300-350 passengers in a standard three-class configuration, and flies efficiently on everything from short-range segments to ultra-long-range routes of up to 9,700nm (18,000km) nonstop.
