United Airlines will temporarily drop flights between Newark International Airport (EWR) and Honolulu Inouye International Airport (HNL) through Sept. 4, part of EWR schedule reductions loaded into the carrier’s system July 26 in response to operational disruptions at United's hub.
The Star Alliance member says in a statement that it will operate about 395 daily flights at EWR instead of 410. “These new reductions impact less than 4% of travelers flying United out of EWR during this time period—most of whom will still reach their destination within two hours of their planned arrival time,” the airline states.
No international flights are affected.
“We’re doing our part to improve the experience of every customer who flies through EWR and create a little extra operational breathing room for every airline that operates there,” United says. “We trimmed about 15 flights from our daily schedule in August and early September and will continue to fly larger planes that give customers more seat options to get to their destination.”
The airline adds that EWR “remains an important part” of its future growth plans. “These moves set us up well for the future,” United adds.
During the last week of June, United faced operational headwinds in Newark because of adverse weather and a shortage of air traffic control staff in the New York area. During a four-day period, the total number of aircraft that could depart the airport was reduced between 60-75% for an average of six to eight hours per day.
