The Infrastructure of Boarding area A comprises three structures: forepart, connecting building and Pier A. The forepart is a large area on two levels dedicated to waiting for the passenger. Inside there are commercial premises, both retail and food & beverage spread over about 6,000 sq m, as well as multiple services designed to make waiting for your flight pleasant including playground, VIP Lounge, work area and nursery. An elevated connecting body transformed into an exhibition gallery of works of art, connects the forepart with Pier A, three-story building mainly intended for passenger boarding.

The infrastructure was created by using as much as possible the natural lighting and the direct and immediate perception of the target areas with large windows on the ceiling and real portholes. Comfort is ensured by an innovative air exchange system that varies according to the number of passengers present. There are spaces entirely dedicated to passengers and bright waiting rooms with boarding gates.

At the Departures level, the offer to passengers is varied and consists of commercial premises, both retail and food & beverage. In the Piazza, the digital totem placed in front of the duty free that accompanies the passenger’s gaze upward to discover the mezzanine balcony and its respective commercial offer finds its fulcrum.

An exhibition itinerary with works from the Archaeological Park of Ostia Antica has been set up along the connecting body towards Pier A, also thanks to the support of IGT, in order to promote knowledge of the historical-artistic value of the area where the Fiumicino airport is located. and give due recognition to an institution that manages and enhances a unique heritage for the country. The seven works on display are statue of Apollo citharidus, statue of Sabrina as Ceres, statue of Nymph, statue of “Venere marina,” “Painting with knight,” “Painting with dextrarum iunctio,” sculptural group of “Wrestlers.” They have a particular bond and a significant historical relationship with the airport: they come from the area that for centuries was the arrival and departure base of the traffic of ancient Rome, through a port system capable of connecting with the whole known world. It is the same area that, today, hosts the Leonardo da Vinci, the main hub for passenger traffic in Italy and one of the major European hubs.

To give an idea of the dimensions of Boarding area A, Aeroporti di Roma CEO Marco Troncone said to “just think that the set of glazed surfaces is equal to over 11,000 sq m, a space equivalent to 15 Olympic swimming pools. In addition, the project defined the layout and layout of the internal circulation and parking areas, such as to favor the most comfortable relationships between the passenger and the environment. A photovoltaic system with monocrystalline silicon panels was also built on the roof, which will power the infrastructure.”

Aeroporti di Roma CEO Marco Troncone said: “With the opening of Boarding area A, we ensure our concrete contribution to the restart of the country, preparing ourselves to face the next opportunities for relaunch, such as the 2025 Jubilee and Rome’s candidacy for Expo 2030, which they offer to Italy and its capital the possibility of reaffirming its central role on the international scene In this context, we want Fiumicino to continue to be an excellent business card: the future-proof gateway to Italy.”

The “green” design found application in the choice of materials and furnishing components: all the artificial lighting was made with innovative LED technologies such as to recreate a real “starry sky” effect on the vaults of the ceiling.
