FedEx Corp. will build a new cargo processing center at Istanbul Airport (IST), doubling its space at the Turkish hub.
Subsidiary FedEx Express Europe currently operates via a shared, third-party facility at IST. The new FedEx-dedicated facility, targeted for completion by November 2024, will span 27,230 ft.2 (25,300 m2) and have the capacity to handle 3,000 pieces per hour.
The new facility will give the express-delivery operator more than twice the space now available to it at IST. In a statement, FedEx also points to the benefit of “in-sourcing operations for greater reliability.”
The processing center will include three parking spaces for FedEx aircraft. Seven truck doors will be available for unloading cargo.
“The facility is also designed with separate parcel and freight processing, benefiting businesses who want to bundle both shipment types in a single network with a single interface,” FedEx says. “Processing parcel and freight separately also creates operational efficiencies, including reducing forklift movements. The facility will offer a smoother customer experience for pickups and drop-offs.”
Eser Sezek, FedEx Express vice president for operations in southeast Europe, Israel and Turkey, says the new facility “unlocks growth opportunities for customers trading intercontinentally."
IST CEO Kadri Samsunlu adds: “The fact that FedEx has chosen to locate its new global air cargo facility on our site reflects [IST’s] position as a strategic super hub, not only for passengers, but also for the cargo and logistics sector.”
