Boeing booked $1 billion in online parts sales from Jan. 1 through June 15, the fastest it has reached the mark during a calendar year, as expanded offerings overcame a slump in commercial orders linked to the global airline downturn.

The $1 billion mark includes some defense and business aviation material, but the “majority” of it went to commercial customers, Boeing said. It did not provide a breakdown of the total.

Boeing’s former Aviall online parts page, now called Boeing Distribution Inc., now provides access to all product lines, including more than 16 million parts. An expanded online catalog combined new e-commerce tools, such as live chat, has contributed to the increase in parts sales in 2021, the company said. Previously, Boeing did not hit $1 billion on online sales before the third quarter in any calendar year.

“Reaching this milestone represents our distribution and technology teams’ commitment to finding new and better ways to serve our customers, as well as our customers’ taking advantage of this service to easily access spare parts support they can rely on,” said Giovanni Spitale, VP of Commercial Parts, Boeing Global Services. “We are on a continuous improvement journey for our customers and digital enhancements enable us to set the standard for excellence in supporting of their aftermarket parts needs.”

Boeing’s parts-distribution capabilities have grown in recent years, with the acquisition of KLX being one notable development. It is a small part of Boeing’s aftermarket business, however, which is shifting its near-term strategy to focus more on core capabilities and less on top-line growth.
