Air New Zealand is reactivating some of its parked Boeing 777-300ERs, as it looks to boost its long-haul capacity.
The carrier had four of its -300ERs in storage in Victorville, Calif. since 2020. The airline returned the first of these to Auckland on Aug. 23, although this aircraft will undergo six to eight weeks of maintenance before resuming scheduled operations in late September.
Air New Zealand said it intends to reactivate the other three 777s that are currently in Victorville over the next 12 months.
The airline also stored three -300ERs in Auckland during most of the past two years. Two of these have already returned to service, and the third is due to resume commercial operations in the next few weeks.
In addition to its seven -300ERs, Air New Zealand had eight -200ERs in its 777 fleet before the pandemic. The -200ERs were also grounded, and the airline made the decision to phase them out early.
A spokeswoman for the airline confirmed that none of the -200ERs will return to service with Air New Zealand.
